Hello,
First of all, thank you for an excellent site devoted to one of the most important artists of the 20th century!
I have a question concerning a specific filmed rehearsal with HvK:
Could anyone tell me where the footage in the new doc. "Beauty as I See It" of Karajan rehearsing Mahler's 5th is from? It is used in the section where Karajan's and Bernstein's differing styles are compared.
Is there any other film with Karajan conducting Mahler?
Thanks in advance!
/Jorgen

Hello Jorgen
Welcome to the Forum!
I have been giving some thought to your query after I sent my reply to you when you contacted me at the website. I am sure that one of the earlier documentaries had Karajan rehearsing the Mahler 5th although I think it was not the Adagietto as seen in the new Dornhelm film. As I said to you, I would guess the footage is from about 1972-73 but hopefully other members will be able to provide more precise information.
In answer to your question about other Mahler films I can definitely state that there are no filmed concerts. Following on from this, it is interesting that the director of “Beauty As I See It” chose to use the Mahler 5th Adagietto as an accompaniment to archive footage when a film does not exist of Karajan conducting it in concert. As a result we see Leonard Bernstein instead!
Of course, there may be other Mahler rehearsal extracts in existence locked away in the archives. But coming back to filmed concerts, wouldn’t it have been wonderful if the September 1982 Mahler 9th concert in Berlin had been filmed!

Hi Jorgen and Linda
You are right Linda, there does exist a further filmed segment of Karajan rehearsing the end of the third movement of Mahler's Fifth Symphony and it is featured on Gernot Friedel's film "Herbert von Karajan - A Portrait" (currently available on Arthaus Musik). Since Karajan conducted the Mahler 5 several times throughout the 1970's its is hard to ascertain when and where exactly the excerpt is from, although I'm inclined to agree with Linda's assessment of 1972/3. Sadly, I'm pretty certain that these two excerpts are all we have to date of what seems to be a fascinating rehearsal.
And yes Linda, it would have been wonderful to have had a film of Karajan conducting a Mahler symphony. It very nearly happened too. For the concerts on the occasion of the Berlin PO's 100'th anniversary in 1982, the Mahler 9 was programmed alongside the Eroica, Jupiter and Choral symphonies - television cameras were there too, but only the Eroica was captured. At around the same time, Richard Osborne did an article on Karajan for Gramophone, principally reporting on the recording sessions of Der Rosenkavalier in Vienna, when he also mentioned Karajan's future recording and filming plans. "More Mahler" was mentioned, but of course nothng transpired......
Best regards, Lee

Hello Linda,
Thank you for the welcome!
It seems likely that the film was made around the time you suggest. If I'm not mistaken there's also a segment of the scherzo played by Karajan. It seems unlikely that they would film only a few minutes, but it's sometimes hard to tell.
If I understand you correctly, are you saying that the film, "the archive footage" you mention, shows something different than what is heard? I have to check the documentary again...
The 9th on film -- ah, that would be more than wonderful! It is perhaps my favourite Karajan interpretation, and as a work one of the most beautiful and heartfelt symphonies I know of.
Regards, Jorgen

Hello Lee,
Thank you for all that useful information. What a shame that they never got around to filming the 9th. That would have been something!

If I understand you correctly, are you saying that the film, "the archive footage" you mention, shows something different than what is heard? I have to check the documentary again... At about 78 minutes there is footage of Karajan and his family and the Adagietto is heard in the background but there are also extracts of film inserted showing Leonard Bernstein conducting the piece in concert. Dear Jorgen,
Sorry my reprehensible delay! Let me point out another movie where there is a piece of rehearsal of Mahler's 5th :
The DVDs, label DG, (=is part of Karajan Centenary) is "Karajan in Concert". They are two DVD including songs of Beethoven, Debussy, Rachmaninov, Ravel, Rossini, Wagner, Weber. ***************************************************************************** The second DVD contains the "Bonus": Portrait "Karajan- impressum" a film by Vojtech Jasny, Herbert von Karajan at 70. At 13 minutes there is Mahler, 5 Symphonie, Probe, BPO. In this film the extract is more long compared to others!
I hope that is was useful
P.S. Even in this film doesn't lack the famous scene of the arrival home of Karajan with the Porsche!!!
Best Regards
Rosy
