Today, 5th April 2009, we celebrate the 101st anniversary of Herbert von Karajan's birth. Tim asked me what I will do on April 5th. Honestly, I don't know, but, like him too, I'll try to make this day a special one. If I'd have money, I would visit Karajan's grave and lay there a wreath. Unfortunately this is impossible for me... Thank you, Maestro, for your legacy, and for all you have done for us! Happy birthday, dear Maestro!

The thought espressed by Catalin is also mine. Thanks, dear Maestro for everything you did in whole your life to honor your Art and thanks for having thought to posterity. I probably hear the Metamorphosen by Richard Strauss. Happy Birthday Herbert von Karajan! ********************* Rosy

I do the translation of your sentence: Guido says: " Greetings! I'm re-listenig to the recording of "Un ballo in Maschera". It's not bad as some people say! Thank you."Helena Mathelopulos, in her book entitled "Maestro" says that the worst performances of karajan are always good! I completely agree. ********************* Rosy

Happy Birthday Maestro! Hello Catalin. Nice picture here on the discussion topic, thanks for posting it. I watched my new DVD of Karajan's 1978 film of Das Rheingold, and enjoyed it very much. As we know, the Maestro left many great performances of Wagner on record, but this is the only film version he was able to complete of a Wagner performance in his lifetime. I would recommend it highly, and was my primary birthday activity for this year. I also took another look at Beauty as I See It, and am wondering about anyone else's impression of the Maestro's last moments as related by his wife at the end of the film - I ask particularly, as her version of events seems to differ from that related in Osborne's book.
Hope everyone enjoys some aspect of Herbert von Karajan's art today.
Best regards,
Tim.

Rosy/Guido
I like this recording very much, there is a magical moment near the end as the King is dying when the crowd sing 'Mercifal God, spare so great and generous a heart for us; he is a ray of your divine love for us poor souls on earth' To me this sounds almost as if actual Angels are singing, and then the music builds up to an almost unbearable crescendo, to me this is pure Karajan magic.

John, Thanks for coming here, and thanks for your words! In Milan, I realized how immense was the contribution of the Maestro. Everyone knew how great was his stature as an artist, especially his illustrious colleagues as Victor De Sabata; even the critics and musicologists were aware of his uncommon gifts. Giuseppe Pugliese, in his book write that Karajan was not a child prodigy because in all stages of his age he has always been a prodigy! ********************* Rosy

Hello Tim,
Finally I've listened a CD named "Romantic - Karajan" (from DG). Then I continued to read the Richard Osborne's book. Thanks for your recommendation regarding Wagner's Das Rheingold on DVD. I think the version of Eliette von Karajan is the correct one -- or this is just my opinion. Though, she might have simplified or modified the history in the movie.
Best wishes, Catalin
