does anyone know whether there exists video footage of Karayan playing the piano himself; he did conduct from the keyboard while playing piano duets on occasion, but I cannot find any pics or video of this.

Hello, welcome to the forum. There are at least two video recordings where Karajan played the piano. One is the unpublished EMI recording of Mozart's concerto for 3 pianos. A movement from this can currently be seen at classicalvideos.net/video/R5DNA8R2N8WS/Concerto-for-Three-Pianos-No7-in-F--WAMozart . Another famous recording is the 1978 Paris TV concert, where Karajan played the second movement of Mozart's 21st Piano Concerto (Weissenberg played the first and third movements).

The Mozart 21 is interesting as, previously mentioned, I wonder why the late Weissenberg remained seated until the beginning of entry.
There is also a brief Karajan piano playing of the Donau waltz while talking with Menuhin.
Also harpsichord footages in the 4 Seasons dvd and Brandenburg 3.
All in youtube.

many thanks for that info charlesb and tjh212. fascinating; I knew about the 1978 Paris one, and smile every time I re-listen to the "4 orchestra conductors" story ( In French).

The Mutter video of the Vivaldi 4 Seasons was released on DVD by Sony. The 1984 New Years's eve concert with the Bach 2nd Violin Concerto also featured Karajan playing one of the harpsichords - this was also released on Sony DVD. The 3rd Brandenburg Concerto was released on DVD in Japan on the "Dreamlife" label. which may still be available from HMV in Japan ( www.hmv.co.jp/en/product/detail/1886254 )
