Testament has released the March 4 1989 concert, Svetlanov/BPO at the Philharmonie: Lenore III, Haydn 100, Tchaikovsky Manfred.
What struck me was how the orchestra sounds different than under Karajan (just 4 months before his death). Suddenly the bass region is much more forward, almost similar to the USSR SO (but still not as red hot as the Russians - esp. with cuts in the Manfred. Perhaps Karajan locked up the organ). Like Alexander said, all the more pity that Karajan omitted the Manfred himself. The best of the 3 works I would cast for is the Haydn, my first encounter with Svetlanov in this composer, whose #100 was an apt choice. The menuet has a tempo akin to Karajan. No da capo.
So Svetlanov has a common with Bernstein - in terms of BPO appearances. Liner doc very good. The extent of the effusive applause it describes is perhaps a bit unexpected.
