Do any members of the forum know if a recording of the Mahler 9 performance in April 1982 at the Salzburg Easter Festival exists in any form? Having re-read Richard Osborne's book, I became curious about the performance which 'left the audience shocked and drained'.

If John Hunt's book is correct, only the first 2 movements of the 10th April 1982 Mahler 9 were recorded. The 5th April performance was not recorded. (I wonder how many other conductors would celebrate their 74th birthday by conducting Mahler 9? if there was a party for the maestro afterwards, it is hard to imagine that it was a happy occasion!)
I may be wrong but I assume that Austrian Radio did not record either performance because they were planning to record the symphony at the main Salzburg Festival on 27th August.
A radio recording was also made at the Berlin Philharmonie on 1st May and of course DGG's live recording was made later in the year, on 30th September 1982.

Thank you for the information Charles! Pity only parts of the performance was recorded.
I also was wondering which performance Osborne was referring to, but I would guess the second of the two performances... One should ask Mr Osborne directly, I suppose (btw, he remains one of the few critics I really respect and enjoy reading.)

Hello All, According to: www.karajan.co.uk/mahler.htmlThe fragmentary recording of HvK's Mahler 9 also includes rehearsal excerpts. I have a suspicion that this is another of those Holy Grail items, but does anyone know where this might be tracked down? Thanks Jim

Welcome!
Can't help on the 9th, but you may already be aware of HvK's Mahler 5 Scherzo rehearsal video.
"Among musicians, rehearsal is not necessary" - HvK to Placido Domingo, p. 99 "A Life in Music"
