Does anyone on this planet ACTUALLY have a recording of the live Sibelius violin concerto that Karajan gave with Christian Ferras & the BPO on 25th September 1971 & was broadcast live on Berlin radio? I've tried tracking this down with no success whatsoever. Please can somone,ANYONE try & get this released. If someone can supply me with a recording of it I'd release it on CD myself.

Dear all,
Being an admirer of Karajan, I have been visiting this forum for a number of years now. After a prompt from Linda, I have decided to take the plunge and join. I notice many of you have access to live recordings not readily available commercially - this Sibelius recording being a prime example. I wonder, could you share info on where these items may be obtained please?
Kind regards.

Hi Pete, Welcome to the forum. On www.karajan.co.uk/want.html (part of Linda's main website) I have always found John/UK and Robert/Netherlands as good sources of Karajan recordings. There are a few unofficial sites on the web offering private Karajan recordings. My current favourite is Celestial Audio in Australia, who recently have issued brilliant transfers of the 1970 Salzburg Gotterdammerung and 1980 Parsifal on DVD Audio ( www.celestialaudio.com.au/AudioDVD12.htm ) . I also like www.classicalvideorarities.com in the USA. Their most recent Karajan release "Karajan at the Piano" is a bit disappointing as it only contains the second movement of the Mozart 21st Piano Concerto and one movement from the Mozart concerto for 3 pianos (the latter is copied off the web). However, if you have not seen the rehearsal from the 1973 Japanese tour, it is well worth getting the "Karajan in Rehearsal" DVD. You may also find www.classicalconducting.com interesting. The site has not been updated for a few years, so I am not sure if their CDs are still available. Please also check your private messages on this forum.

Hello,
in the publications of Parsifal 1980 or Götterdämmerung 1970 I would be careful: there are copies of copies. The quality is usually bad. I have contacted a supplier of old live recordings (http://www.gebhardtmedien.de/), who lives a stone's throw away from me. Mr. Gebhardt said that for example, the early Memories or Hunt productions have been taken directly from the broadcasttape, as the copyrights were in the early '90s has not respected as much.
I own the whole ring in the rare individual publications of Memories from the 1990. The sound is not nearly as good as the studio productions, but much better than this over-filtered copies of the copies.

I have the early Memories release of the complete Salzburg Ring. The sound quality is pretty dreadful.
In contrast, the Gotterdammerung from Celestial Audio has wonderful sound. Obviously it is not as perfect as the studio recording but it gives us the chance to hear the live performance in reasonable sound.
If we wait for Testament or DGG or Orfeo to release "official" versions of Karajan's live performances we will probably be waiting forever. Many of us like to hear recordings of Karajan's live performances, even when the sound is not perfect. We should be grateful to the unofficial sources that release them.
