Hello,
Does anyone know the reason why the Maestro didn't accept women in his orchestra? Many said that he was a misogynist, but I don't think so... I know this is a delicate problem, but I'm just curious to hear your opinions.
Thank you very much, Catalin

Hello CatalinNR! The Maestro was happy to accept the clarinetist, Sabine Meyer, in Orchestra; but the Berliner Philharmonik Orchestra got angry with the Maestro; for this and other reasons, Karajan gave his resignation! He estimated very much women you think of the famous violinist Ann-Sophie Mutter! ********************** Best Wishes Rosy

Hello Rosy, Of course the Maestro esteemed very much soloists like Anne-Sophie Mutter or Maria Callas and many others. But could you tell me more about the episode with Sabine Mayer? When an how did it happen? Sorry for being so inquisitive, but unfortunately I live in Romania, and there is not much bibliography about Karajan in my country. All I know about the Maestro is from his music (this year I bought the Complete EMI Recordings ) and from the internet. So when and why got angry Berliner Philharmoniker with him? Thank you very much and sorry to be a bother... Best wishes for the New Year! Catalin

Dear Catalin, I'm very happy to help you! Sabine Meyer was taking by the Berliner Philharmoniker Orchestra in 1982, as a clarinetist, in a trial basis for one year; however they said that the girl was too good and more suitable as a soloist, but they couldn't find a solo good enought to replace Sabine. Herbert von Karajan was strongly convinced that Sabine would be appropriate to play in the Orchestra! At the end of the trial period, karajan and the Berliner had different ideas on Sabine; at this point the dispute between the maestro and his Orchestra became very unpleasant, their relations became compromised, they are accused each other of everything. Karajan felt very hurt, and so he disbanded all commitments with their! In short, they did spites each other as happens couples after so many years of happy marriage! Unfortunately the Maestro's health deteriorated over more, so he gave his resignation in April 1989. ..........continue........

Dear Rosy, Thank you a lot for helping me. I really had no idea about this conflict between the Maestro and his orchestra. Of course, the apple of discord was, as always, another women... ;D It seems that my sources (in fact a paper) where I read about the misogyny of the Maestro, were only stupid lies. Please tell me, what biographic sources do you use about Herbert von Karajan's life? Are they English, or they are translated into Ialian? In Romanian, there is no book about Karajan, though I searched and I searched... Well, many thanks again, and a very Hapy New Year! Catalin

Hello Catalin Welcome to the Forum. I agree with Rosy that the two Richard Osborne titles are the essential books on Karajan but if you want to get an idea of the wide range of Karajan titles that have been published then may I suggest that you look at the following page of my website: www.karajan.co.uk/book.htmlAlthough I do not pretend to own every Karajan title in existence my collection does cover a large proportion of them. Yesterday when I authorised your membership I came across your new "Karajan's Lovers" group and was pleased to see that you had linked to my website. Thank you. Best wishes Linda
