When Herbert von Karajan conducts, does he usually chew gum? Doesn't it distract him from a steady rhythm? Look at this video, in the beginning, it looks like he is chewing gum? Is he really? www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gd9JS07bq-sWatch about 0:51

Dear Beethoven2, Unfortunately the M° Karajan was very ill, he wasn't chewing gum! You consider that he over the serious problem to his spine, he had a stroke (ictus)..this is the reason of involuntary movement of his jaw. ******************************** Rosy

Dear Beethoven2,
I have all the consideration for you. However, how could you believe that Karajan -- who was a so serious and sober person -- would have chewed gum during a concert?... As Rosy said, this was an involuntary movement of the jaw, due to his age and his painful illness. Moreover, I observed this movement only once, not repeatedly.
With due respect, Catalin

..Apart from all this, the Maestro that day was very excited, his daughter Isabel said she had seen him cry for emotion; he saw himself in Evgeny Kissin, indeed even karajan was a prodigy child; he made his first public performnce, as pianist, at five years old! ******************************** Rosy

Very interesting and instructive, like all Rosy's postings. Thank you for this information, Rosy! I can't wait for the books about the Maestro, that you recommended me...
Best regards, Catalin
