The first CD ever produced was a recording of Herbert von Karajan conducting the Alpine Symphony by Richard Strauss. 30 years ago, in 1979, Sony and Philips have started to work together for a new recording format, the Compact Disc. Although the Compact Disc was preceded by a similar technology, Laserdisc, it was the CD that eventually proved to be the chosen format of the world's media manufacturers. The first CDs were able to store up to 60 minutes of music. At the request of Herbert von Karajan, Sony prolonged the duration of the CD, in order to store the slow version of the Symphony no. 9 of Beethoven. Karajan spent also a lot of his own money in the record industry, for research purposes. Thank you, Maestro!
