Did you know there was one? I didn't, until I stumbled upon a picture of it, taken by a tourist: www.flickr.com/photos/jamespann/270478919/Nice statue -- bronze, yes? I was wondering if anyone had any other photographs of it from different angles, or with someone alongside for scale. It must have been erected some time after 1993. I was in Salzburg in the summer of 1993 as part of a four-month "grand tour" on the cheap, and while I was on the "Sound of Music Bus Tour" (yes, there is such a thing, and, yes, to my embarrassment, I went on it), I remember the guide pointing out Karajan's home in Anif, as the bus was driving through the countryside. I had forgotten that Karajan was born in Salzburg (I always associated him with Berlin), but later that day, after hearing the mention of the Karajan home, I dropped by the tourist information office and specifically asked if there were any monuments or memorials to Karajan in the city. None, she said, apart from the eponymous Platz. But she did direct me to Karajan's grave: I visited it, and remember being struck by its modesty. It seemed so fitting, somehow, for the great man to have been interred in this quiet churchyard in a little village the mountains. But still, I remember wishing that there had been a museum and/or a statue to commemorate his achievements, so I'm happy to discover that now, there is one. And I was just wondering if anyone had seen it in person.

Darkehmen, I was in Salzburg in 2003 and saw the statue of Karajan then; it was erected in 2001. I would think that the statue itself is possibly between 4 and 5 feet high, with the base being about 2 feet. My photograph of this statue can be seen on Linda’s site in Collections / Photographs and Miscellaneous -www.karajan.co.uk/pics2.htmlAlso on that page are my shots of the Grave. The wreath in the background on the left was from Die Berliner Philharmoniker, whilst that in the foreground with the blue sash was from the Sony Corporation - nothing from DG or EMI though. You will see that my shots were taken on 17th April, and so I assume that the wreaths had been placed 12 days previously on the birth anniversary. I like the single spray lying on the grass in your shot, but possibly the wreaths are only placed in April. You will also notice John’s photograph of the bronze portrait of Karajan outside the church at Anif. This was in position at the time of my visit, but somehow I missed it !!!!!!!

I missed that statue on the memorials page. 4'-5' you say? Pity it isn't the size of the great 19th-century Kaiser-Denkmal and Bismarck-Denkmal statues that one sees throughout Germany. And here's a close-up of the Karajan bust in Anif at the sculptor's site, alongside her bust of another resident. I don't think either the statue or the bust were in place when I visited, back in 1993. A similar bust is also in place in the Stadttheater in Ulm, and I remember seeing Karajan busts in both the Philharmonie and, unless I'm mistaken, in the Musikverein in Vienna. As I recall, the Berlin bust shows him with eyes closed, which I thought was a fine touch.

Darkehmen and David:
NOT A REPLY, ONLY A THOUGHT FOR THE MAESTRO!
Ideally to Anif :
So, whenever I look at that photos depicting the place where rests in peace the Maestro, I am touched deeply in my heart. The extreme semplicity of the tomb, I approached so much more to the man who wanted to make everyone happy with the Music.
That his message, that is legacy for us!!! To truly love the man resting in the quiet of Anif, we have to accept everything about him, even without understanding. It is not enough to love his interpretations, but to accept his human contradictions.
The plaque as simple reveals his greatness;
I would like to go to Anif to pray in that place is so beautiful, beetwen those mountains that he loved very much!
" Dear Maestro, we left you with your music, it was your wish "

I visted Salzburg in 2006, the statue is I think pretty much lifesize. Indeed the cemetary at Anif is a peaceful wonderful place.
There is also a Bust of Karajan in the foyer of the Festspielhaus in Salzburg, I have asked Linda to post photo's (one include's me I'm afraid) as I am not technical enough to know how to do this on the Forum.
Also, for those who do not know, both the Festspielhaus in Salzburg and the Philharmonie in Berlin are in streets named after Herbert Von Karajan.
