As I'm sure you know, the Freni performance is in actual fact a broadcast of the full dress rehearsal, Freni withdrawing [...] So the CDs are only recordings of the rehearsal?... Oh me, and I wanted so much to see how had it sounded a flop of Karajan 'live'... In fact, I cannot believe that this man could have flops! Thank you anyway for the information, Lee. Catalin

I would never presume to be qualified to judge on the merits of any performance of La Traviata, as it is an opera that I really don't like much at all (Rosy will never forgive me!). Hi Lee, Don't you like even the Brindisi aria in La Traviata? It's hard to believe... Best wishes, Catalin

Both of the Traviata CD sets are pretty much the same, one is an actual performance with Anna Moffo the other a dress rehearsal (which is still a 'live' performance with an audience but Mirela Freni sings the main part. Don't worry these are not flops by any stretch of the imagination.
Lee I agree with you regarding the ending, however Freni does'nt quite do it for me.

I could not agree more.
When the set of Verdi overtures came out all those years ago I was shell shocked by the overall sound, the Nabucco is sublime.

John,
Thanks for the reply. So there are 2 (two) CD sets! Well, I found the CD set with Anna Moffo, but I don't know where could be the other one, with Mirella Freni... I want to buy them as soon as possible.
Best wishes, Catalin

I was lucky enough to see maestro Karajan conduct several times: once in Trieste (!), The other times in Salzburg. In the latter venue, I saw him conduct two Verdi operas: Otello (1972) and Don Carlo (1975). There is (was?) A wonderful Opera d'Oro CD of his 1971 Otello, same cast as 1972; and the live 1975 Don Carlo (with Domingo) is available for example at Opera Depot. Both productions were splendid, and the Otello, seen live, was gangbusters. You can verify this by comparing the live edition with the later official studio recording. I always adored Karajan's studio work, but, for opera, I found him electrifying in the theater!

Hi Salzburger1, Welcome. On the 1986 Don Carlo DVD (Sony Telemondial) there is a curious moment where it seems Karajan was irked, but for me it's hard to tell. www.youtube.com/watch?v=SX1MOu9d5bM2:17:11
