....if you look at the film " Carmen ", suddenly, appears a bandit with moustache : he's Karajan protagonist of a fun comparsata ( extra ) in his film-Opera " Carmen " of the 1967

Rosy, Thank you very much for your information. I was surprised at the post! I just uploaded an article about the the film - Carmen in 1967. Please see the third photo of the following link. It shows the figure of the extra. blogs.yahoo.co.jp/mahalo04/53983431.html

Hi mahalo, Thank you! Very amusing, it isn't true? I bought the film " Carmen "many years ago in VHS. I remember that scene. Karajan liked to appear in his film such as Alfred Hitchthingy! (I write his name correcly..then, when I post it, it appears so...!?) ********************** Rosy

K also appeared on stage in his Cav/Pag video. I have not seen it but I gather that it's not quite the same effect as he was in Carmen.

Many thanks tjh212! It's very curious; before I'd not noticed it. When I've a little time, I'll watch the film and I'll care to see another Karajan's extra in "Cavalleria Rusticana" or "Pagliacci".********************** Rosy

Hi Rosy and Tjh
Yes Karajan does appear as an extra in I Pagliacci. In the final scene, as the action on the stage slowly starts to merge with real life, he is one of the audience members who can be seen complaining about the the strange happenings on stage.
Incidently, in my opinion, this is the finest of all Karajan's opera films, much , much better than the contemporaneous Carmen and Cavalleria Rusticana. What does everyone else think ?
Best regards, Lee

Many thanks, Lee! Certainly in "Pagliacci", Karajan is perfecly joined in the spirit of the Opera, which is one of the beautiful of verista period! I like "Cavalleria Rusticana" interpretation, but it isn't at the same level of "Pagliacci". "Carmen" is nice, but the Maestro could be less light and propose a reading less "folk", in my opinion. *************************** Other opinions? Rosy

Hi Rosy
Thanks for your response.
Musically as interpretations, I think that Karajan's Cav and Pag are quite superb (although I differ from you in thinking the Mascagni the better performance of the two) and I like Karajan's Berlin Carmen very much indeed (so much better than the Vienna performances), however, the spoken dialogue by French actors seems more plausible in theory than practice.
With regards to the films, I think the Cav and Carmen aren't that good, but the Pagliacci absolutely superb. It was this I was referring to really. Along with La Boheme and Butterfly, it is in my opinion, his best filmed opera.
Warmest regards, Lee

Lee: Wow, collection of every Karajan!
Vickers' contribution on that Pagliacci must have also been great.
On another note, I wish the 1987 New Year video also included his speech before the Donau waltz (as is the custom every year). He was supposed to have said, "Peace, peace, and more peace."
Searching for Karajan videos on the internet yielded some very interesting results. There is one of him praising Karl Bohm in terms of Chinese philosophy, and one with Cecilia Bartoli and Sumi Jo in his studio.
By the way, some one in my neighborhood has a California license plate KARAJAN (!)

By the way, some one in my neighborhood has a California license plate KARAJAN (!) Hello tjh212 I think that the car licence plate may belong to Calvin Chiu, founder of the Herbert von Karajan Society in Los Angeles. If you go to the following page of the Guest Book on my website you will see his details: www.karajan.co.uk/gbook/gbook.php?page=2Best wishes Linda
