Paracelsus, a medieval European alchemist, was noted for making significant strides in the field of medicine, establishing chemistry as a significant tool for physicians, writing dozens of scientific works, and making groundbreaking advances in understanding and treating wounds and diseases.
In the Gernot Friedel film, “Herbert von Karajan 1908-1989: A Portrait” Karajan is shown quoting Paracelsus:
“Emperors and Kings disliked me. The high and mighty and city mayors didn’t like me. But my patients always did”
Apparently it was a favourite quotation of his and one with which he obviously felt a close affinity.
At a time when Karajan’s musical legacy is being challenged, I thought it apt to post it here on the Forum.
