This new topic follows on from Lee’s response to my posting on Karl Leister, when James Galway was mentioned. I believe that a new topic is now required for the discussion of this unique musician.
I was fortunate in that I saw Galway several times with Karajan and the BPO in the early 1970s:
Salzburg Easter Festivals in 1971 & 1972
London (RFH) & Edinburgh in 1972
London (RAH) in 1973
Possibly the most memorable of these James Galway concerts for me was at the 1972 Easter Festival when Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune was on the programme. I think that he was in great form that evening; the opening solo was fantastic with a wonderfully full and velvety feel to the sound.
As always the extrovert, I remember that Galway was wearing a very large red bow tie for this concert, which was of course in complete contrast to all of his colleagues. It’s up to you whether you actually believe this, but I can assure you that it is absolutely true! I just remember wondering to myself how he had managed to get away with it!
I have always had an unwritten rule in that I never purchase recordings of highlights or excerpts, but as an exception to the rule, I recently purchased James Galway’s Ich war ein Berliner CD which is an interesting precis of his work in Berlin, and also possibly a rather nice tribute by DG.
I have added in two Galway links below which I hope may be of interest.
The first is of several extracts from an interview he gave some time ago to WGUC, Cincinnati's Classical Public Radio Station.
You will need to have REALPLAYER installed in order to view the videos.
May I suggest that you start by viewing the clip entitled On Herbert von Karajan which is approximately halfway down the page. Here you will see Jimmy, in his inimitable style, discussing the attributes of his friend Herbie.

Next follows a most interesting Japanese site entitled List of music sources of James Galway in various orchestras made by Masahiro Koshiba. I found this site to be absolutely fascinating, and the Honegger Symphonie Liturgique which Lee mentioned (in the Karl Leister topic) is listed, but I didn’t notice Solti’s Night on a Bare Mountain. However I have noticed a couple of omissions myself, and after all the site is entitled Incomplete List of James Galway in Orchestra. I have noticed that the listings are occasionally updated with the most recent addition being earlier this month. It is therefore possible that the Solti recording may appear eventually.
