Konradin Groth was co-principal trumpet in the BPO from 1974 to 1998. A most interesting article appeared in the March 2001 edition of the International Trumpet Guild Journal in which Groth discusses his career and is interviewed by John Irish. The article is available as a PDF document of 8 pages (Adobe Reader required), which in addition contains several interesting personal photographs - www.trumpetguild.org/pdf/2001journal/0103iris.pdfWith my grateful thanks to Gary Mortenson, ITG Publications Editor, for his permission to include the above link in Linda’s Forum.

As ever David, I'm amazed that your are able to find these pieces and am grateful to drawing them to our attention. One thing I would take up with Herr Groth though, is his comments on performing in East Berlin (on the final page of the article). I think that he was referring to the first time that the orchestra was allowed to play in East Berlin, rather than East Germany itself. The orchestra had been allowed to perform in East Germany previously; in December 1981, Karajan and the BPO performed in Leipzig for the first time. (Schumann's 4th symphony and Eine Alpensinfonie were on the programme). I read somewhere that many members of the orchestra considered this one of the finest concerts that they gave under HvK (although I have also been informed that it was Zarathustra on the programme that night too !). Either way, it must have been memorable.
Best regards, Lee
