Dear All, In my opinion, there are some works, Symphonies or Operas, which accompany us for life. They are part of us. Similarly, there are others that discover or rediscover, along the course of our existance. I must confess that my favorite pieces, have a listen average almost daily! An example "at random"... Beethoven Symphonies : my hand scrolls on my DVDs collection and, inevitabily, it stops on a magnificent Symphonies! (N. 3 and N. 7 are my daily breat). This doesn't mean that there are no other works that I love so intensely; there are, of course, but these 10 that I propose, cheer my life since time immemorial! ************************** Let me give you a terrible proposal: Only N. 10 works, conducted by Herbert von Karajan, you can take away in a desert island: N. 6 symphonics and N. 4 Operas, from which you wouldn't like to separate for any reason. Before, I reflect, then try to make a difficult selection. Please, try you too!!! Rosy

...After careful reflection, I chose the 10 pieces: N. 6 Symphonies and N. 4 Operas, without which my life would lose a wide range of colours. Fortunately, all other works are well placed in my mind, and I can recall them when I want, as long as my memory functions always good!!! *********************** My 10 inseparable in a desert island: - Beethoven---- SymphonyN. 3
- Beethoven---- SymphonyN. 7
- Schumann----- SymphonyN. 4
- Tchaikovsky--- SymphonyN. 5
- Tchaikovsky--- SymphonyN. 6
- Verdi----------Messa da Requiem
- Gluck------------"Orfeo ed Euridice"
- Mozart----------"Don Giovanni"
- Puccini -----------"Turandot"
- Verdi------------"Don Carlo"
********************** If I had admitted Works conducted by other interpreters, my choises would have been a little different! Rosy

Ciao Rosy
I hope you are well !
Your challenge is quite formidable - but, is it the music you are referring to or Karajan recordings ? My list below contains recordings by HvK that have spoiled me for ever - I cannot listen to other versions, as these recordings seem so right:
Beethoven: Overture Leonora No III - Berlin PO (live London April 1961) - this recording may be hard to find, but it's electrifying. : Symphony No 2 - Berlin PO (DG Dig 1984)
Bruckner: Symphony Nos 3, 5 & 8 - Berlin PO (DG 1970's)
Mahler: Symphony No 4 (DG 1979) Symphony No 6 (DG 1976)
Puccini: La Boheme & Madama Butterfly (Decca 1972/3) : Tosca (DG 1979)
Schoenberg: Verkarte Nacht - Berlin PO (DG 1973)
Schubert: Symphony No 8 (Unfinished) - Berlin PO (EMI 1975)
Sibelius: Finlandia (EMI 1976) : Karelia Suite (EMI 1981)
R Strauss: Salome (EMI) : Ein Heldenleben (DG Dig 1985)
Tchaikovsky: Symphony No 6 (Pathetique) - Berlin PO (DG 1976) : Ballet Suites, Sleeping Beauty & Swan Lake - Berlin PO (DG 1971)
Verdi : Aida (EMI 1979) : Otello (EMI 1971 - and DG on DVD) - have just been watching the Zefferelli film of this work - amazing how he seems to have been influenced by HvK, particularly in Act I, in his conception. However, the Karajan film - through simple adherence to the text - is far more moving and memorable in spite of its age.
Wagner: Lohengrin (EMI) : Parsifal (DG 1980) : Gotterdammerung (live 1969) : Meistersinger, Prelude Act I (EMI 1978)
I'm sure that I have forgotten many, but this will do for now. One small note, however; Karajan made many recordings, often of the same work, so please heed that I have specified certain performances as well as the works themselves.
Warmest regards, Lee

Rosy Dear Lee, I understand , Lee, you like to take away all that beautiful music that you've chosen, ;D however the rule is very hard! When you can, namely, as soon as possible, would you prepare a list that includes only the number of pieces allowed? ******************************************************************************Thank you very much! P.S. When there are many recordings (always), you will choose only one!Ciao! Rosy

I cannot conceive the Opera without magic or away light-years from the dictates of Composer, which always explains the historical setting etc... Often, the modern stage are unacceptably poor and sad... **************************************************************************Rosy

Hi Rosy and everyone
Last year I went to Rome and attended the Rome Opera for 'La Traviata' 2 or 3 years ago I attended La Scala Milan with 'La Boheme' both productions were 'Zefferelli and where brilliant. He is the last of the traditional directors, all this new stuff is poor by comparisan, just like the conductors of today compared to Karajan.
Anyway, on to the top 10.
4 x Operas
Lohengrin Don Carlos Der Rosenkavalier The Merry Widow (Karajan makes this the most beautiful music, Rene Kollo, Elizabeth Harwood and all of the cast sing as if they are in love with the music, this is a very underated recording)
6 x Orchestral
Sibelius 5th Schumann 4th Strauss Alpine Symphony Shoenberg Verklarte Nacht Brahms 1st Offenbach Orpheus in the Underworld Overture
Tomorrow after another glass of wine (red) (Italien, French or Spannish) it may be a different 10, no it will be.
John

Ciao Lee, when you've finished your long celebrations with "Montepulciano d'Abruzzo" wine, please, you sacrifice some piece (of heart) to get Number 6 Orchestral pieces and Number 4 Opera. Please..... Per favore... *************************************************************************Thank you Rosy
