On the "Karajan and Film" page on the website regular visitors will know that there is a section on the various documentary films made about the Maestro. Over the past few days I have updated this section to include the new films brought out for the Centenary and I have also tried to sort out some of the confusion which can occur over titles: www.karajan.co.uk/films.htmlNeedless to say if anyone can help with more information I would be very grateful. Thank you. Linda

Hello Linda! Having found that often the same documentary there are several version, I decided that I'll write you those who create more confusion, putting the Author emphasized. I think it's the easiest way(!?) The following documentaries are in my possession, so I write what I read on the covers or in the titles of head or tail of films. ****** ****** - Herbert von Karajan a Portrait by Jurgen Haase, Immortal, 1999, Bonus CD
This film has always generated confusion. Perhaps, putting the author (or director)...
- Karajan in Concert N° 2 DVDs, DG, First-ever release, "karajan 2008", BONUS: An hour-long portrait of Herbert von Karajan at 70, by Vostech Jasny.
In the Site is mentioned the original 1978
"Releaining glimpses of Karajan at work and play, with rare footage of rehearsals, masterclasses, and interviews with the Maestro, artistic collaborators, and family members". 1 DVD contains Orchestral music by Beethoven-Debussy-Rachmaninov- Ravel-Rossini-Wagner-Weber.
As regard the other films that are shown in the Site, it seem to me are all, and are cited very clearly! There would film titled "The karajan Legend", that even you mentioned in the Site, but I don't know the Author and the Label. It's difficult to find and the images are of poor quality. The only resource:" Classical Video Rarities: tinyurl.com/yqsz5yI don't know if I was useful..... Rosy

Hello Rosy Thank you for your contribution. I actually have copies of all of the documentary films which I have listed on the site apart from the following three titles: "The Karajan Legend" (c.1989) I have been put off buying a copy from Classical Video Rarities because of the poor film quality but if I cannot find a better source I will probably order a copy soon. "Herbert von Karajan: Erinnerungen von Kurt Pahlen" Directed by Rainer Schmaelz (1996) "Herbert von Karajan-Der Mensch" A film by Otto Schwarz (2008) As I understand it, the film, “Herbert von Karajan a Portrait” was directed by Patricia Plattner because this is a version of her film "Maestro, Maestro !" which was based on the book. “Karajan. Eine Hommage an den großen Dirigenten written by Claire Alby. Jurgen Haase is the producer and distributorOn the site I have avoided giving details of labels and numbers as these can change with new packaging etc so I have kept to listing the original film release dates. This is why the Vostech Jasny film appears under its original release date of 1978. I agree with you that the subject is confusing Thank you again Best Wishes Linda

However documentaries are important and they like a lot, so if someone happen to have two copies of similar or equal, misled by the different covers, patiense! You have done an excellent work and, given the variety and vastness arguments, simple and immediate consultation. I'm sure that the most beautiful gift for the birthday of the Maestro is your Site and your great commitment in keeping it up to date and to be always present for the needs of many visitors. Karajan would be-is- happy! (I believe that I wrote, it's correct repeat it in the Guest Book!) ***************************************************************************I didn't even the three titles you've mentioned, (but I'll have them as soon as possible!), and "Maestro for the screen" will arrive at the end of June. I hope! Best Wishes Rosy

.....................Watching Documentaries.........................
..........What most attracts me and fascinates me............
...The look very lively, penetrating or naughty, cannot be invented; even though you know that there is a camera. On his way to sit still very comfortable, feline movements and grimace as cat, when he urges the Orchestra, are part of his multifaceted personality. I like his boldless and his rigour; his change and his stay true to himself. He likes to walk, he likes the silence, meditation, nature, sport. He speaks calmly, seeking the appropriate words, he is very decided, knows what he wants. He laughs. He could be a good actor. He has an exceptional mimic, and movements, as I already said, feline. I've noticed when he deals with the direction of the Operas. Vittorio Gassman said that to be a good actor, we should not have the elbows or knees (without corners). If we look Karajan, we see that he is so. In the end, I conclude that on the podium or to our height, he's always Karajan. There is always his immense determination. He is fast in turn, you will not notice! Surprising Maestro...

Thank you for this Linda - I have to agree with Rosy and say that it is easy to get confused with the current flood of Karajan documentaries on DVD and your research has brought some welcome clarification to the issue. By the way, have you or anyone seen "Von Karajan - Maestro for the Screen" (dir Georg Wubbolt) which has just been released by Arthaus in the UK and if so, what are your thoughts ?
Thank you, Lee

As I wrote in my post above, my copy will arrive at the end of June ("HMV" Japanese); however, I want to propose Arthaus link, because there is an interesting "Watch Preview". I think that this documentary is a little like "Beauty as I see it", however, every movie proposes something new. My advice is: Lee, order a copy, perhaps with "Arthaus" you can have it before me! The images seem clear and beautiful as "Beauty as I see it" : www.naxos.com/catalogue/item.asp?item_code=101459*****************************************************************************I hope to have been useful! It's true, in Karajan version, the Maestro, which is directed, is at the center of attention; but his eloquent gestures, help to understand the evolution of the structure of the Symphonies and very well accentuate the harmony or climax. For those not familiar with the music, those camera shots are useful and pleasing, very pleasing! www.naxos.com/catalogue/item.asp?item_code=101459****************************************************************************I apologize if what I wrote isn't relevant, but I felt the need to write it. Then, in appropriate thread, I'll deepen this topic. I know, Beethoven- Karajan are my splendid obsession! Thank you! Rosy

Dear All, This morning they arrived 2 DVDs that I had ordered on 03/06/2008, on Classical Video Rarities: tinyurl.com/2vy3u8Titles: - "Karajan Legend"
- "Karajan Era Documentary"
******************************************************************************Regarding "Karajan Legend", I must say that the video is of poor quality, fortunately the narrator speaks English and during the film, are displayed beautiful photos of Maestro to every age. The film begins and ends with images of the concert in San Pietro Chatedral, Citta`del Vaticano , in 1985, carried out during the mass celebrated by Giovanni Paolo II. There is a long biography of the Maestro and various interviews. For more information, I will give you advice to read the Darkehmen's post (Hi, Darkehmen!) in the thread "Classical Video Rarities". Regarding "Karajan Era Documentary", the video is of good quality; there is footage of Karajan rehearsals and extensive interviews to Maestro. Some examples, long pieces of: - Brahms : 4 Sinfonie - Dvorak : 9 Sinfonie (probe) - Schonberg : Verklarte Nacht (probe) interview - Mozart : Sinfonie Es-Dur KV 543 (probe) interview - Beethoven : 7 Sinfonie, (Peking 1979) buffet interview - Beethoven : 4 Sinfonie interviews to musicians and A.S. Mutter - Ravel : "Daphnis et Chloe`" 2. Suite, 1980 This video is like me a lot, especially because there are many rehearsals. German language and no subtitles! Rosy
