For those of you who have access to BBC Radio 3, this Saturday the 5th July there are two programmes featuring Herbert von Karajan. The first, as part of the most excellent CD Review which starts at 9.00am , has a section starting at 10.15 entitled "Karajan on disc" where listeners "suggest their favourite recordings from one of the great conductors of the 20th centruy" - it is presented by Peter Quantrill, who I've found to be quite fair on HvK; his most favourite recording of the Maestro is the legendary and mythical Shostakovich 10th, live from Moscow in 1969 on Melodiya, so I'm hoping that we may get an excerpt !
The second programme starts at 12.15 and is entitled "The Real Karajan". It is presented by the former editor of Gramophone magazine James Jolly, again a sympathetic and knowledgable critic of Karajan.
Don't worry if you miss them, as they can be accesed online for up to seven days after transmission on the BBC Radio 3 website. That said, I'm not sure how easy it is to access these programmes for those not resident in the UK...
Best regards, Lee

Thank you Lee for posting this information. The date has been altered from the 12th July to the 5th July and I have now posted these amended details on the Centenary page of the website under "Broadcasting": www.karajan.co.uk/centenary.htmlAs you will see there are also other programmes to be broadcast over the next couple of weeks, which, although not devoted entirely to Karajan performances, do contain rare radio archive recordings. Best Wishes Linda

Here is all the information I have put on the website: Saturday 5th July 2008 12.15 pm Note: date changed from 12th July BBC Radio 3 "The Real Karajan" A 45-minute documentary presented by James Jolly. Earlier, at 10.15 am, “CD Review” has a 90 minute section entitled "Herbert von Karajan on Disc" where listeners suggest their favourite recordings.
Monday 7th July - Friday 11th July 2008 2.00 pm BBC Radio 3 "Afternoon on 3: Maestro-Herbert von Karajan and Friends" Including rare radio archive recordings of Karajan conducting the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Symphony and Philharmonic Orchestras, and the Philharmonia Orchestra. Plus recent concert performances by some of today's leading conductors - especially those associated with the Berlin Philharmonic and with the BBC orchestras.
Mon 14th July - Friday 18th July 2008 at 10am BBC Radio 3 "The Classical Collection" James Jolly plays many of the recordings heard in "The Real Karajan". Linda
