A new live recording from Sony Classical will come available. www.hmv.co.jp/product/detail/2697064Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 3 Sibelius Symphony No. 5 Glenn Gould, piano Berliner Philharmoniker Herbert von Karajan, conductor Live Recording: 05/1957, Konzertsaal der Hochschule fur Musik, Berlin Monaural +Bonus: Glenn Gould spielt den Beginn der 5. Symphonie (Mitschnitt eines legendären Konzerts in Berlin) I think Sibelius may be the first official release. And, I am not sure whether the concerto with Glenn Gould is as same as what has already been released or not.

Thank you Mahalo for keeping us informed of the latest releases of Karajan in Japan - I believe that you are correct in stating that this is the first time the Sibelius has been released. As for the performance of Glenn Gould, according to John Hunt's concert register, it was given on the 24th, 25th and 26th of May in concerts opening with Hindemith's Mathis der Maler Symphony and closing with the Sibelius with the Beethoven in between. A performance of the Beethoven has been released before on Nuovo Arts, which merely states May 1957 on the labelling - I would suspect it's the same performance, but would hope that the Sony release would be in better sound. Best wishes, Lee

The quality of the sound is pretty good due to the technology of "rbb". It is a disadvantage that this issue does not include the beginning of Sibelius by Gould which was once announced. However, it includes a PDF which is a scanned image of the concert programme of the day. In addition, the recording date was May 26th,1957. Therefore, the piano concerto is as same as what was once released.

The musical symbiosis between Gould and Karajan is examplary. The nervous energy at the beginning of the concerto is typical of Karajan of the 50s, and it's the same kind of energy that Gould brings out when he enters after the orchestral tutti. I was so impressed by this recording, not least because of how singing and 'linear' Gould's playing is (as opposed to the 'extra-staccato' style that he used for Bach and for later recordings).
The Sibelius is also a wonder. The sound landscape is already formed in this performance, although perhaps missing some sense of scope that came later. But again the inner energy is incredible!

Mahalo
It's great that this has been released, however it is a shame that the the remaining work in the concert was not recorded, the Hindemith Mathis der Maler is a favourite of mine.

John,
Yes, I agree with your opinion. Karajan did not record/perform the piece after 60's.
If he left the recording then, it should be very valuable one.

As it is noted in the CD booklet, the recording of the Hindemith was apparently deleted. This practice was common in radio corporations, as reel-to-reel tapes used for professional recordings took a lot of space and sometimes it was decided to delete the random tape to save storage space.
In any case, it is a BIG pity.
