Which CD release of Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde" conducted by Herbert von Karajan, recorded on July 23 1952 in Baureuth, has the best sound quality? I have the Myto Records release, but hope to get a release with better sound. Thanks!

HI otbo and welcome to the Forum! Unfortunately, the technology isn't always able to perform miracles! I know these issues, but I don't know if the sound is better than the Label that you suggest: Bayreuther Festspielehaus Richard Wagner "Tristan und Isolde", 1952 : Label: Orfeo D'or, Live, issued 16 October 2003 Label: Walhall classic, issued 15 January 2004 ***************************************************************************and than, it's inevitable that I propose to you: Teatro alla Scala Nilsson, Windgassen, Neidlinger Label: Golden Melodram classica, issued 30 November 2007 ****************************************************************************Best Regards Rosy

HI Otto! I found this live version. I think that the label "Golden Melodram" is excellent, so I hope that the sound should be good! You can see here: tinyurl.com/5rhwlk, here you can see the cover, tinyurl.com/6q7rss, here you could buy! ****************************************************************************I hope to be useful! Ciao! Rosy

Hope this is not too late for this post: every edition is horrible (in my opinion) even the ORFEO one, which saturates a lot. I even believe that ORFEO should have NEVER issued this version. THERE IS ONE EXCEPTION THOUGH: the DS Classics edition, coming from tapes that were the property of Martha Mödl herself. The sound remains a bit narrow but this is clear with no saturation of any kind and the presence of orchestra/singers is good -- definitely the best version of the many I have heard.... As can be expected, this edition is now out of print, but it turns up on ebay frequently (as per link below). Hope this helps JH cgi.ebay.com/WAGNER-TRISTAN-UND-ISOLDE-KARAJAN-CD-BOXSET-NEW_W0QQitemZ140248187596QQcmdZViewItem?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116

Dear Jaques-Henri, I's a great fortune that we have you to repair the damage! I hope that you have heard the other labels to judge them so badly; I think that it's difficult to perform miracles on a record of 1952, which is beautiful and important as a document, in my opinion. ****** ****** I sincerely apologize to Otto if I gave him bad advice. The next time I will be more careful. Rosy

Rosy cara mia, don't you ever apologize for this! The reason I have a rather firm view on this is because Orfeo didn't do their homework properly on the tape and also because this DS label is very obscure and may have already died in oblivion.....
....I guess I am also quite aggressive because this particular CD is one particular performance I spent a lot of money on....but then the DS version was worth it and here we have the young Karajan of the early 50s at his absolute best with the ultimate cast...
So please don't take any offense you are such an essential, poetic part of this forum I would hate to have offended you,
Molti baci, JH

Dear Rosy and JH,-
thank you so much for all your information. I have now ordered the DS release. I will return later to this forum with a review of the release compared to my MYTO set.
By the way: have the live recordings of "Lohengrin", "Tristan und Isolde", "Der fliegende Holländer" and "Die Meistersinger in Nürnberg" from the Salzburg Easter Festivals in the 70's and 80's, all conducted by Karajan, ever been released on CD? I only have tape recordings of "Lohengrin" and "Meistersinger" in a not so good sound quality. I would just love to get them on CD's in a fine(r) sound quality.
Thanks!
Best regards,
Otto
