Sensoria, Many thanks from me also for supplying this very interesting information. Once again our friends in Japan are leading the way in the Centenary Year; and unless I am mistaken, it appears that this issue is not yet even mentioned on the German Orfeo web site: www.orfeo-international.de/pages/news_186_e.htmlI have spent some time with John Hunt’s Discography and Concert Register in an attempt to find if these are all new releases, and have reached these conclusions. However if anyone disagrees or can add more detail then please do so - 1) The Bruckner 8th on 28th July 1957 appears to be a new release. A new Bruckner 8th? 2) The entire Mozart Concert on 29th July 1957 appears to have been released previously on a Deutsche Grammophon CD 453 199-2. However there appear to be very few internet references to this and I can’t see it on the DG web site and so assume it has now been withdrawn. John Hunt mentions that this was the first appearance of the BPO at the Salzburg Festival. 3) The Brahms Requiem on 22nd August 1957 appears to have been released previously on an EMI CD 566 8792. This seems to be a similar situation to the Mozart in that I have the impression that it has been withdrawn. 4) The Twentieth Century Programme on 13th August 1957 appears to be a new release. It will be fascinating to hear this early BPO Honegger 3rd. Below is a link to HMV Japan which gives a listing in release date order. This has revealed that in addition to the four CD set mentioned by Sensoria, there are also Orfeo releases of Falstaff and Fidelio from the 1957 Salzburg Festival, although John Hunt’s Discography states that both of these have previously been released on Arkadia “CDKAR 226” and “CDKAR 222” respectively. These three Orfeo releases therefore include Karajan’s entire output from the 1957 Salzburg Festival. The HMV link below also shows the two October Audite releases which have already been mentioned on the Forum by jhgaulard in - KARAJAN CENTENARY YEAR 2008 / RECORDINGS / AUDITE KARAJAN COLLECTIONwww.hmv.co.jp/search/index.asp?sort=date&keyword=karajan&lang=en&formattype=1Regards - David

Hi David
Thank you for the clarification.
At first sight I thought that the Bruckner 8 was the one released on Andante a few years ago, but this was of an earlier performance (17 April 1957). I suppose one can't have too many Karajan Bruckner 8's.....
I'm totally at one with you about the Twentieth Century Programme on 13 August and agree with you about the Brahms and Mozart discs, which I have in my collection (the Mozart in particular is very good). I didn't especially like the Brahms, although this may have been in part due to the recording quality. However this performance is a rather special one for John Hunt, who you mention in your posting. For those who do not own Mr Hunt's Discography and Concert Register (a must for every Karajan fan), permit me to qoute from its introduction:
"My first encounter with the work of Herbert von Karajan was on 22 August 1957. A performance of the Brahms German Requiem was being given in Salzburg by the Vienna Singverein and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. In those days the Felsenreitschule was an open-air venue, with a canvas canopy in case of inclement weather. The residents of the buildings clustered on the overlooking hillside were permitted to eavesdrop on the performance, and one of those buildings was the students' hostel where I was staying. From an open window and in the warm summer dusk I was immediately struck by a beauty of sound which conveyed atmosphere, intensity and passion by turn. A few nights later, under the same conditions, I experienced Beethoven's Fidelio conducted by Karajan, and then, in the Small Festspielhaus (the Large one was not yet built), his magical interpretation of Falstaff with a cast headed by Gobbi and Schwarzkopf. (As if all this was were not enough, the same crowded week in Salzburg yielded Strauss' Elektra conducted by Mitropoulos and Mozart's Figaro conducted by Bohm !)"
Those were the days....

Thanks for the warm welcome, Linda and David. Maestro's 100th birthday coincides with my return to classical music from 10-year sabbatical. In the mid 90's, it was hard to imagine recordings like these would ever surface. Luckily, the URL that I showed you bliefly talks about the origin of the recordings. I'll do my best to do a little bit of translation job 1) The Bruckner 8th on 28th July 1957 appears to be a new release. A new Bruckner 8th? Previously unreleasedThe reading of the Bruckner 8th, recorded in Festspielhaus in Salzburg is confident and energetic one with the pulsating adagio movement. Andante has previously released the same 8th symphony which was lifted from the April 17 performance (currently out of print).
This seems to be a similar situation to the Mozart in that I have the impression that it has been withdrawn.Previously released. You are absolutely right, David. These two discs had previously issued from DG and EMI respectively but recently withdrawn. Even in Japan, these recordings are hard to come by nowadays. Nice bonus for those who have missed the original DG and EMI discs. 4) The Twentieth Century Programme on 13th August 1957 appears to be a new release. It will be fascinating to hear this early BPO Honegger 3rd.Previously unreleasedObviously, the most interesting part of the set. The belief review says that the performance is bombastic and totally unlike his usual slick and flamboyant manner. This is a superb rendition that one could not help but recalling the virtuosity of the Berliners under the greatest maestro.

Dear All, Welcome sensoria! If we become as collectors never satisfied, compulsively buying everything, just everything, all editions of all labels, and their new releases, I wonder if we have time to listen to all the recordings, not counting the fact that we could get to have No. 2 or 3 or 4...etc disks or boxed collections absolutely equal! I've reached the point to check whether I've in my possession an edition that I saw in Internet or in a store, so I thought to catalogue on the computer my precious CDs and DVDs! *** *** *** About Orfeo d'Or, I recently bought a pair of CDs; the sound seemed to me is good, very clean and precise in the high peaks (often in other "emlazoned labels" I found inaccuracies sound, when there are acute tones of string instruments). I've to say that when I hear an imperfection or a nuisance, I make a check of registration with professional equipment; so I cannot to blame my poor equipment HI- FI! *** *** *** Best Wishes Rosy
