What if Karajan recorded...
Other Mahler symphonies? (When Abbado took over the first piece he conducted was a great work that Karajan never conducted). Other Shostakovich symphonies? (He almost recorded #7). Other Dvorak symphonies / works? Sibelius 3? Tchaikovsky Manfred?
Others?

Looking back at this interesting thread, a friend of mine in Japan has just sent me a DVD of Maris Jansons conducting the VPO in Prokoviev's Romeo & Juliet Suite from Vienna 2002, how I wish Karajan had recorded this magnificent work. John

And what if the complete tchaik ballets, Faure Requiem, Faust, Rach Syms ....
It's interesting that K conducted Prokiev's 4th (version 2 - just once), 7, as well as the Sinfonia Conc., and P & Wolf. I wonder how Prok 6th would sound like under him, esp last mvt. His somewhat heavy approach to certain type of march-like passages might work well here.
Speaking of the VPO, I am reminded of their recordings of K's teacher Franz Schmidt. I believe the only Schmidt that he did was the Notre Dame intermezzo?
K did mention once that "Even the VPO gave bad concerts" once in a while.
Perhaps we can start a thread on K's concert repertoire vis a vis recordings and vice versa.
