On Sep.9th,2008, which is the centenary year of Karajan, a most important event
for this musician was held at Suntory Hal in Tokyo/Japan.
The 1st part was entitled "KARAJAN und WIENER PHILHARMONIKER"
Philharmoniker-Vorstand Clemens Hellsberg as the lecturer talked
about VPO's history with Karajan then.
The lecture lasted about 30 minutes, however, I would like to
introduce two interesting episodes explained by the special guest
Riccardo Muti here.
At 7 AM in 1979 when Muti was traveling for his musical business in USA,
the telephone rang at the hotel in North Carolina.
Who was the caller? The voice over the phone answered "I am Karajan".
Muti did not understand what he said then immediately. But he repeated "I am Karajan".
Muti was forced to understand what was happning.
Karajan asked Muti to conduct Mozart's opera "Cosi fan Tutte" at the Salzburg music festival
in 1982. Muti did not answer soon because he had never conducted the opera.
Karajan requested him to answer his request at once.
That was why Muti had to answer "Si" (the dialogue was done via Italian even by Karajan).
Another one was more moving. Muti said "This episode will be made public for the first time",
It was one midnight of July, '89. A manager (of Salzburg Festspiele? or VPO,? I was not sure)
called Muti. He told Muti that Karajan had just died.
He also asked him to conduct "Un ballo in maschera" in the next Salzburg Festspiele.
Krajan reheased the opera, but his hearth was not good. The manager asked Karajan what
would happen if Karajan would not conduct the opera. He said, "ONLY one conductor will
play the substitute for myself. His name is Muti".
However, Muti could not undertake the job because he could not be a replacement of Karajan.
Muti told the manager over the phone that the opera should be cancelled because ONLY Karajan
could be worth. Therefor, as we already know, Solti undertook the job as a replacement.
As a wrap-up, Philharmoniker-Vorstand Clemens Hellsberg said as follows:
"Karajan changed my life. "(Depending on a Japanese interpreter. )
