Concert of 28/05/1969 (date of my 1st birthday!) the legendary Bach-Shostakovich concert (I guess where that famous picture with the composer and the maestro was taken). Enjoy, JH Hi Jacques-Henri! What strange coincidence! Just afternoon I saw and ordered the 2 CDs!( along with other items); however, thank you for information ******************************** Rosy

Dear all
I got an email from Amazon France that tells me that the disc I ordered, Shostakovich 10, is now not available (my French is poor, but I got the basics of what they're saying).
anyone know if it's available elsewhere?
Did anyone actually receive a CD from Amazon France?

Stuart, no panic! The email you received was to let you know that the order was DELAYED, not cancelled. My order is still being processed and ranks as "being available within 7 to 10 days" -- if you look at the individual products in the link I sent a while ago. I was sent the email as you and I am happy to say it is business as usual -- bar the delay of course....

Dear Jacques-Henri
Thank you very much for your assistance here. My French is so poor that I obviously didn't even get the basics!
Well, at least I got a pleasant surprise when I read your posting.

For those of you who may be intrigued, there is also a volume 3 ! www.hmv.co.jp/product/detail/2878955This is the concert from the 30 May 1969. with a Mozart Divertimento and Ein Heldenleben. As Rosy has pointed out, it has been left to our Japanese friends to ensure the availability of all three volumes ! With best regards, Lee

As to their sound quality, they are very excellent. I think the former "pirate" CDs are rematered from the LPs.
However, these Melodiya CDs seem to be done from kinds of their master tapes. No scratch noises exist. The atomosphere is clear enough. Even the sound between the movements are recorded.
We can enjoy the three days historical performance in Moscow with excellent sound quality.

Hello All! Right now , my confidence shop tell me that Volume N° 3 may be ordered. I assume it's so across the Europe; then I recommend to you to inform you in order to avoid high taxes in other countries. The double CD should arrive in January! ********************** Rosy

A couple of days ago I received a letter from Karajan's discographer John Hunt enclosing an article on these Melodiya recordings entitled "Karajan in Moscow". I have now typed it out and added it to John's other contributions in the Visitor Section of the website: www.karajan.co.uk/visitor.html#visit8Best wishes Linda

Linda
Thankyou for placing John Hunt's comments regarding the Moscow concerts on the site. It is interesting to note the comment regarding the composer as we all thought that the Moscow concert was the one he attended. However, I am currently reading a book entitled 'The Karajan Dossier' by Klaus Lang, this is an interesting book and it is well worth getting. I've actually borrowed it from John Hunt. It is primarily made up of a number of interviews that Lang had over the years with Karajan, various management involved with him and members of the Berlin Philharmonic. One of the interviews is with Michel Schwalbe the one time leader of the BPO. On the subject of the Russian tour Schwalbe says ''I still remember playing like a man possessed, and it's a miracle I did'nt have a heart attack. Although the first concert involved only Beethoven symphonies, I was asked to act as joint leader. Then, at the 2nd or 3rd concert , we played a symphony by Shostakovitch. He was there in the hall and at the end came up to the platform and embraced Karajan and me. He was almost in tears, he was completely beside himself and said that never before had he heard an interpretation of his symphony like it''
This account appears to refer to the Moscow concerts as these came before the ones in Leningrad.
Anyway that aside, I have recently aquired the 4 Moscow Melodyia cds and agree with John, they are all very good, however the Shostakovitch 10th is special, in my opinion it beats the commercial releases and my previous favourite, the 'live' Karajan Salzburg 15-8-1976 performance with the Dresden State Orchestra.
I also feel that the sound quality is much better than John gives it credit for.
Once again, these are are well worth getting. I would also be interested in any comments from other members who have purchased these CDs and if anyone has read the book I mentioned earlier.
John
