I was recently watching the Karajan Rehearsal videos of Schumann Symphony 4, and was deeply impressed by his great knowledge and skill for bringing out a beautiful sound in the orchestra. Since I am quite interested in conducting, I wanted to study the piece, however, I don't have a recording. I looked on amazon and ebay for Karajan recordings. Which recording would be best if I wanted to study the recording and then the rehearsals?

Hello Beethoven2! I hope you are well. If you're looking for the DVD (or CD audio ),you can find it here: tinyurl.com/cjfujvThe disc that could interest you is N° 3. It contains Rehearsal and Performance of the Symphony N°4 by Robert Schumann and short Rehearsal and whole Performance of the Symphony N°5 by L. van Beethoven. I hope to be helpful! ********************* Ciao! Rosy

Thank you, Rosy, for your help, but I was really looking for a recording of the Schumann symphony that would go along with the Rehearsal DVD. I was going to study the piece and the rehearsal. So, are there any specific recordings that would go along with the rehearsal? If not, are there any good recordings? How about the Beethoven?

Tricky question ! Of Karajan's three recordings, my personal favourite is the one taped with the Berlin PO in 1958; it's available on EMI, albeit possibly only as part of a boxed set. There's a special atmosphere on this recording which IMO is not replicated by the two later recordings, although they too have garnered high praise. I dare say that the interpretation too is more similar in conception to Vienna Symphony performance as featured on the rehearsal video.
Of other conductors, the versions by Furtwangler, Kubelik and Sawallisch are also worthy of consideration.
Hope this helps and best regards, Lee
