Recently, I've bought a DVD, release in 2006, entitled The Salzburg Festival, a brief history, by Tony Palmer. It seems that it is the first full-length documentary film which tell the history of the remarkable Festival. This more than 3 hours film traces the tortured history of the Festival, and includes extracts from many of the great performances that have been witnessed over the years, many preserved, many not seen before. Very interesting Max Reinhardt and his 1920 version of Jedermann.
Of course, you all know well the history of the Salzburg Festspiele, but I would like to propose you some interesting chapters:
Salzburg, the Archbishop, the Mozarteum and War, Michael Steinberg; Gehmacher, President Fischer, Burgstaller and Rabl-Stadler.
Max Reinhardt and Jedermann, Maximilian Schell, Brandauer, Steven Bach and The Archbishop.
The 1930s, Lotte Lehmann, Bruno Walter, Toscanini, Richard Strauss.
The Klaines Festspielhaus and the Austrian Nazi Party, Rabl-Stadler.
......
Herbert von Karajan, Peter Gelb, Muti, Ozawa, Mehta, Pollini, Ann Murray.
The Karajan Sound, Mariss Jansons.
......
The Easter Festival, Simon Rattle.
......
The Karajan Effect, Mirella Freni, Don Carlos; Grace Bumbry ,Carmen; Gernot Friedel.
Karajan at home, Peter Alward, Eliette and Isabel von Karajan, Wimberger.
.....
Death of a Hero, Domingo, Susanne Harf, Ozawa.
Enter Gerard Mortier, heart attaks and The Planet of the Apes.
and many others, until arriving to our days.
We know almost all movies about Karajan, but I consider this film a good document.
Very Best Wishes
