Romanian Radio contacted me last week to give me details of their "Herbert von Karajan Day" to be broadcast on a Romanian music channel on 5th April 2008. The details are on the Centenary page of my site under "Events": www.karajan.co.uk/centenary.htmlThis prompted me to wonder if any other broadcasters are planning similar television and radio commemorations. I know that John wrote to the BBC in November and was told that nothing was planned. I have emailed them again today as well as Classic FM, an independent UK classical music channel and if I get any replies I will post the details. But what about other countries? Do you know of anything planned in other parts of the world?

I have been contacted by Richard Osborne who has provided me with more information about the BBC's plans to commemorate Karajan's centenary. The details are on the following page of my site under "Broadcasting": www.karajan.co.uk/centenary.htmlHe has also been involved with a programme for National Public Radio in the USA, which will go out on 5 April. He will provide more details after he has recorded his contribution in London.

I have just put the following scans on the Centenary page of the website. They are from the "Radio Times" regarding Saturday night's edition (22nd March) of the "The Archive Hour" on BBC Radio 4: Reading the above I hope that this programme may have a more positive approach to Karajan and his legacy. We will have to see.................. I have just finished listening to the broadcast and I was very pleasantly surprised...............at last a more positive appraisal of Herbert von Karajan! If members go to the following link you will be able to hear, for a limited time, the programme on the BBC's "Listen Again" facility: www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/mainframe.shtml?http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/radio4_aod.shtml?radio4/archivehourPlease Note: the length of this link is too long to be fully active so copy and paste it into the address line of your web browser.

Please Note: the length of this link is too long to be fully active so copy and paste it into the address line of your web browser. Here is a direct clickable link to the BBC 4 radio broadcast (tinyurl.com is a fine means of compressing long URLs into forum-sized links): tinyurl.com/c58swI agree -- this program is surprisingly good. It features extensive quotations from Karajan himself, and best of all, it discusses at length his process of rehearsing. The most interesting comments are made by Stefan de Laval Jezierski, a horn player under Karajan in Berlin, along with three other musicians. That section begins at about 20 min. into this one-hour documentary. Note in particular his observation about the dynamic range that Karajan utilized, and that the Berlin Philharmonic no longer plays either as loud, or as soft, as it did under HvK's tenure. It is very similar in style to the best segments of the centenary EMI audio documentary on Karajan -- both even using the same work as their musical centrepiece, Ein Heldenleben. The one thing that would have improved this doc would have been comparison excerpts, to show how Karajan's approach differed in sound from that of other conductors. Richard Osborne also comments, as does Klaus Geitel. The whole NSDAP period is wisely left till after the music discussion. I would say that it's skippable, except for the fact that it makes some American critic (who apparently did a hatchet job on Karajan shortly after his death) look like an imbecile. His criticisms of Karajan's conducting in relation to politics are so ridiculous that you can't even get angry -- only laugh (he actually sounds like a parody of a Karajan critic) -- and in the end, his argument comes down to the fact that he didn't think Karajan was nice enough. But as I said, that's the second half. The first half is strictly music-oriented, and it's as fine an exposition of HvK's approach to orchestra-training as I've ever heard. Not perfect, but better than any other recent critical discussion, apart from the EMI audio doc. Recommended. (Thank you, Linda, for discovering this program.)

Thank you, Linda, and thank you Darkehmen for the explanations! I was able listen to the radio (I work with computers), unfortunately, I understand the concept but not the details! Sigh! I can understand Karajan because he speaks slowly and punctuates the words. What a wonderful music! (Music and his voice!!!) You don't imagine how I'm happy and excited!!!!! Thank you with all my heart!! *****************************************************************************Have you registered? A million of kisses Rosy

There are 2 specific TV broadcasts and 1 radio broadcast to do with the 100th HVK celebrations, if anyone is able to record any of them to DVD & the radio one to CD I would be very grateful for a copy, I will of course exchange some of my collection of 'live' HVK concerts and/or various interview CDs etc.
The programmes are as follows.
In Austria, TV, ORF2, 11.05 on 30th March the Vienna BPO concert.
In Germany, TV, ARTE, 21.00 on 5th April.
In France Radio Musique C'etait Hier on 9th April 20.00-22.00
Many thanks
John

Last night, the German TV channel ARD broadcast a documentary about Karajan.
Entitled "Herbert von Karajan-Der Mensch", it portrayed Karajan as a man, a human being. There were interviews-both done specially for this documentary and archival-with his butler, chauffeur, widow, colleagues, secretary, and even his children (when they were young). It provided very interesting insight into the complex personality that was Karajan. And the main point throughout the film was that, behind the public image-the yacht, the plane, and vanity- Herbert von Karajan was a simple man, who cared deeply for his family and close ones, and who preferred smoking a cigarette a day with a glass of whiskey, watching a John Wayne film, than going to a glittery jet-setters party.

Did any members manage to see the three different films about Karajan in the past few days? Arte, the French-German arts channel broadcast two documentary films; "Maestro, Maestro!" (a repeat broadcast) and "Filmstar Karajan". ZDF broadcast a shortened version of Robert Dornhelm's film "Karajan-oder Schoenheit wie ich sie sehe".
From the three, I found the Dornhelm film the most interesting. "Filmstar Karajan" was good, but with the focus on Karajan's use of the different media formats esp. film, it wasn't as convincing.
What do others think?
