It has long been documented that Karajan's way with Tristan was quite special. Unfortunately, to date the two extant recordings available have been somewhat hit and miss, the 1952 Bayreuth transmission in historical sound, the 1971 studio account marred by some strange balances from the recording producer. So it is with great interest that I noticed this recording from Myto: www.europadisc.co.uk/classical/84535/Wagner_-_Tristan_und_Isolde.htmThere was a similar release of Die Walkure last year, which I can report was in very fine sound; so this one should be most interesting, not least the incredible cast ! With best regards, lee EDIT WED 3RD MARCHIt seems that many of Karajan's performances from La Scala are now appearing on CD. I wonder if the 1953 Carmina Burana will ever see the light of day ?
