Today i got this 2CD set of DG's 'Originals - Legendary Recordings' series. The recordings were (of course) originally published on vinyl and are in remastered form here (as i imagine anyone reading this knows).
So far i took the time to listen to two pieces, Symphony no. 4 and the Black Swan of Tuonela. What it comes to the pieces themselves, they could not possibly be more beautiful or reflect better Finland's nature (i am Finnish, just so you know). No wonder Sibelius said Karajan is the best conductor for his works.
None of this was surprising to me, but what astounded me was the sound. i can't imagine a CD sounding more perfect, more real. Other than Karajan Gold recordings, it's never happened that whilst listening to a CD i don't wish i was listening to a vinyl - but here it was so (without the downsides of vinyls, which i usually don't mind too much as compared to CDs downsides). The sound is unbelievable and showed me for once that it is not the technical aspects of CD that make the sound inherently inferior to vinyl, but it's merely a question of doing it right.
Truly beautiful remastering work. In this case i would only like to have the original vinyls (which i must admit i haven't heard, but i can't imagine them sounding any better than this) for the sake of the cover art.
