''conducted the audience''; as a ''proof'' he mentions Karajan's words from an unspecified interview that the listener relies on the conductor's gestures to be guided, or words to that effect. Actually I would consider the audience on 1/1/87 to be very lucky to be "conducted" by K during Radetzky March!

I am hooked on Manfred Symphony IV m 73-80 ever since I first heard it.
Going back to the thread on composers' own evaluations and Rachmaninov, K conducted Rach 2 5 times during the composer's life time. I doubt though that Rach ever heard any of those performances.
