Karajan in Iran

Hi All,

Does anyone have any information about when Karajan was invited to Iran by the Shah in the mid/late seventies? It was before I became interested in classical music (I was about 12 years).

All I know is that Beethoven's 5th was on the program.

Any information on this will be highly appreciated.

According to www.Karajan.org, there were 3 concerts in Tehran. On 8th and 9th November 1975, Karajan conducted Beethoven's 4th and 5th Symphonies. On 11th November he conducted Mozart's 35th Symphony, Richard Strauss's Till Eulenspiegel and Brahm's 2nd Symphony.

As has been mentioned before, there seems to be a problem with the www.karajan.org database and Karajan did not conduct the Bach Suite No. 2 at those concerts.

Mahalo appears to have ignored my previous post and just cut and pasted the information from the database on www.karajan.org . Unfortunately, the information on www.karajan.org is wrong. Someone has added over 1000 entries for Bach's suite number 2 to the list of "live" concerts on the database. All of these entries are incorrect, when he did conduct the work live, the music is listed as "Orchestersuite h-Moll BWV 1067" not "Suite Nr. 2 h-Moll BWV 1067".

I believe the music on 11/11/1975 was also not played in the order suggested by the database. I think that it is much more likely that Karajan played the Brahms 2nd symphony at the end of the concert.

So Mahalo's entry should read:

At least it's not the 4 Seasons 1000 times. (Although seeing HvK at the harpsichord may be, just may be, a salvo). I wish Mutter succeeded in convincing K to conduct Szymanowski instead of working on the Vivaldi. (She did try).

My next HvK pursuit will be to find out his different Bolero timings.
