I was about to discard the 1989 Ballo Maschera, for at first hearing I concur with Osborne's "lackluster" Act I comment, especially the end. But for some reason I kept listening to it over and over, and discovered that there is a sense of beauty in the duet right after the 1st chorus, that made others sound almost like yelling. I also felt when the chorus comes in again the 2nd time it somehow sound different than the 1st, the 2nd more poignant by the brass.
Then, when Act II starts, the Karajan of the Nabucco Overture suddenly returns.
