Someone has posted on youtube just a few hours ago the 1977 version of Beethothen 9. For some reason the 2nd mvt beginning sounds clearer on the treble than the other mvts. This is precisely the difference I get in the different copies of this recording I have - the cassette version is like the II beginning clip, whereas the CDs are worse to my ears because they are too heavy on the bass. The SACD is slightly better.
This is also the difference I sense in the Karajan Golds vs the original releases - the Golds having worse frequency response(especially the Bruckner 7 and the Shostakovich).
