Dear fellow Karajan fans, Please share yours thoughts about Maestro Von Karajan's glorious 1965 DG recording of Sibelius' Fifth Symphony--THE recording I would choose if I could only keep one Karajan recording! THANKS!

Hello jdp and welcome to Linda’s Forum – I think that you’re in very good company when you mention the legendary 1965 Sibelius Fifth: three years ago to coincide with the Centenary, Richard Osborne listed it as one of Karajan’s top 5 recordings on the NPR site (National Public Radio in America). I was pleasantly surprised to find that the page still exists. It also contains a link to the final nine minutes of the piece. www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=89146879Best Wishes – David

For me, this is a most cherished and treasurable recording. Karajan was a master in this repertoire and he had an incomparable orchestra with which to express his conception. His Sibelius violin concerto recording with Christian Ferras is extraordinary as well and most highly recommended.

I still have a hard time listening to this and many contemporary DG recordings. They just messed around with the sound too much, so the sound is often unnecessarily glaring in the highs, and overall, too hazy, lacking transparency. Sometimes really important detail simply can't be heard because it just disappears into the haze. It would be fantastic to hear what it actually on the original master tapes, before they did all that processing and sweetening...
Same about the Wagner Ring, for instance. I find that somewhat maddening because orchestrally and musically, these performances really are outstanding.
