Hi Adnaan, Welcome to the forum. I still haven't had a chance to see the "Second Life" DVD yet but my guess is that it is the same footage used in the 1978 South Bank show (an arts TV programme in the UK). I don't think that the whole Mahler 5 performance was recorded, just the excerpts used in the show. The South Bank Show was broadcast in May 1978 so the excerpts were probably recorded in one of the December 1977 concerts or the concert on 1st January 1978. Before writing this, I checked this forum for other references to the filmed Mahler 5. You may be interested to read the thread hvk1955.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=karajan&action=display&thread=149 . Incidentally, does anyone know if the 1978 South Bank show is available to view?

Hi adnaan,
there is no complete record of this recording. First, the symphony was made as one of the last sessions of the Jesus Christ Church in 1973. The sequences shown here in the film - I dating him to 1977 - a documentary film "Mahler in Probe und Konzert, UNITEL" were removed, which was never completed or shown.

Hi Charlesb and Philharmonie I would like to thank you very much for your replies, it is sad though that such a great performance was not captured especially as the cameras were already there....!! i think that not filming this Mahler's 5 and the 9th in 1982 1st may performance or the september 1982 Berliner festwochen performance is a great miss ( i would say mistakes!!) ........

Also of what i seen in this film (Karajan- das zweite leben) is that the cameras captured many recording sessions of Karajan with the BPO in the philharmonie as of Stravinsky's le sacre 1975 and the recording of brahms 4 symphonie 1978 and also Respighi's pini di roma rehearsals and recordings sessions, i think these filming was done by deutsch grammophone themselves but the question for me is: why hiding all these treasures all this time and only showing some seconds if a documentary or something similar comes out every 20 or 25 years........!! ?
