Has anyone seen this film or made a copy of it? On a separate note, the 'live' Beethoven Piano Concerto's 3 & 5 from the Japan Tour 1977 are being released in Oct in Japan, these were not released last year when the 9 Symphonies from the same tour were issued on CD. You can access these on www.hmv.co.jp and search Karajan. John

I understand that the complete film 'Karajan - Das zweite Leben' is being broadcast live on the Austrian Station 'Servus TV' on Christmas Day at 20.15 (Central European Time), therefore I think at 19.15 in the U.K. It appears that this should be available for live viewing via the Servus TV website: www.servustv.com then on to ‘TV-Programm’ etc. etc.… There’s already a short trailer available to view on their Christmas Day page at 20.15. My German is somewhat less than fluent and so if anyone finds fault with any of the above info then please don’t hesitate to reply. I’ve also heard that a DVD of the film is being released next summer by Deutsche Grammophon. I had assumed that it would have been released by 'Arthaus Musik' as was the case with Eric Schulz’s recent film 'Carlos Kleiber - Traces to nowhere'. Best Wishes to one and all for Christmas and the New Year – David.

Exactly the information I had received yesterday from Karajan-Cetrum Salzburg.
Also a peaceful Christmas and a happy New Year.

Within the last few hours, Das zweite Leben has been made available on the Servus TV site’s ‘ IPLAYER’ - www.servustv.com then on to MediathekI’ve no idea how long the film will remain available in this format on the site, and so hurry while stocks last! Even with my very limited understanding of spoken German, I was completely enthralled by this film; there is so much which is new and also even rather pleasantly surprising. I therefore look forward to the release next year of the Deutsche Grammophon DVD with subtitles. It is heartening that we hear mainly from those who worked directly with Karajan, rather than from those hacks who still persist in peddling fiction. The significant contributions of Anne-Sophie Mutter and Professor Klaus Stoll (BPO bassist for over forty years from 1965) would appear to be particularly interesting.

I am completely surprised from excerpts of the 5th Sinfonie of Gustav Mahler. Besides Klaus Stoll is still Eberhard Finke (1st solo cello 1950-85) to speak. Even a young orchestra member speaks with admiration and respect about Karajan.
Only the EMI sound engineer Wolfgang Güllich expressed very aloof to all the recordings and the recording in general. Since speaks Günther Hermann (DGG sound engineer) and Dr. Hans Hirsch (producer DGG) animated much of the work with Karajan.

The Deutsche Grammophon DVD will be released in about a month’s time. The Amazon listing shows that subtitles will be available in five languages; but I believe that in addition to those mentioned, Japanese and Korean will also be available. www.amazon.co.uk/Karajan-The-Second-Life-DVD/dp/B00B5AIB50

USA Amazon apparently is delaying the release for some reason.

tjh212,
That's unfortunate - it is a very interesting film. Fingers crossed that it is obtainable soon.

I particularly value the footages of his skiing, the autograph session after Mahler 5, and the moments with Michel Glotz. I didn't find David Bell as mentioned in the credits but perhaps I need to revisit. Found 2 more interesting documentaries: Karajan - Der Mensch, not certain if already mentioned here. Many fascinating moments from Maestro's non-musical side: www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7DjN8QDwtoKarajan interview www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WF5HtGwWdsThere is a caption translate option on youtube, but very little use.
