Dear all Can anyone advise me on how I can get one of them there Euro commemorative coins? You see I've just got home from a terrible day at the office and I've decided to chill out by glugging some Italian wine and listening (at a high volume level) to the Live October 1963 BPO Karajan Beethoven 9 and despite the miserable exchange rate, it's made me go all Europhile! Please help! Regards Stuart

It's interesting, many HVK fans have mentioned how good the Oct 1963 Beethoven 9th is, I obtained it last year and it really makes a great impression. My freind John Hunt also feels the same and I know Mahalo our member friend from Japan has also recently obtained this performance and has the same feelings.
If you can get a copy it will be very worthwhile.
And Rosy, yes only good Italian wine with your Beethoven.

Dear Rosy
Your imagination is spot-on and let's just say I was very happy by the time I got to the 'ode alla gioia'!!
I don't want to place drink at the centre of all this but, following a rather good day at the office I am supping on a glass of Turkish Raki as I listen to Paul Hindemith's Mathis der Maler symphony 1957 BPO Hvk courtesy of the ridiculously good value EMI complete recordings box set .
Dear John
I haven't happened upon any references to the October '63 LvB 9 on the forum but, I agree with you, it's well worth anyone's money in obtaining it. HvK did tend to let himself go a bit more in those days, especially in the concert hall. Must say though, it's the Oct/Nov 1962 studio version that I think is the tops.

Hello,
Yes, I was impressed very much by Oct'63 No.9. I also love '62 DGG studio version which I listened to Karaja's No.9 for the first time.
