I have been contacted by the Eliette und Herbert von Karajan Institut and given the following information:
There is a special edition of the DU-magazine (a magazine on culture) on Herbert von Karajan. It contains a lot of interesting articles by Richard Osborne, Eleonore Büning and interviews with Christian Thielemann and Eliette von Karajan among many others. On nearly 100 pages it contains also around 50 photographs, some of them rarely seen. The magazine is unfortunately only available in German: www.karajan-music.com/magazin.html
Also, the Institut have launched a trailer commemorating Herbert von Karajan, 25 years after his death. The trailer also announces our new website that will be coming soon: www.karajan-music.com/
Herbert von Karajan recalling the night before his first jump on a horse as a child:
" 'How can I lift this enormous thing up into the air and over the fence?' I thought to myself. Then I realised no one lifts the horse. You set it in the right position and it lifts itself. The orchestra will do the same thing."
(New York's Juilliard School master class for aspiring conductors in 1976)
Thanks to Linda giving me the heads-up on this, I have secured my own copy of the DU Magazine. For a German speaker, it must be a real treasure trove, but alas it is too much for my ancient and rudimentary school boy knowledge of the language. To be fair, from what I can make out, it is largely biographical and doesn't really contain much which the more avid Karajan fan would already know. I've taken the liberty of attaching to this posting some of the photos that I haven't seen before, so I hope you all find them useful:
