Hi Charles
Thanks for the information on the planned release of the DG Opera recordings.
Obviously the inclusion of the Decca recordings is a bonus however as far as I can see the list that appears on the JPC link includes some of the DG 'live' recordings but does not include others that DG have previously released such as the Strauss - Die Frau Ohne Shatten, Montiverdi - Poppea, Pizzetti - Murder in the Catherderal and the Beethoven Fidelio relaesed a few years ago with Christa Ludwig. There may be others that I have missed, if this is the case I am dissapointed as this set in my opinion will not be the complete DG recordings.
Does anyone know of any other DG sets that may not be included or have any comments on this?
Regards
John

Thank you for the information eidos.
As John says, it does seem strange that not all of the live recordings previously released by DGG have been included, particularly operas that Karajan did not record commercially, like Die Frau ohne Schatten or Tannhauser. As the box has fewer CDs than the other DGG boxes, there would have been room for more operas.
Also, I don't understand why Die Schöpfung has been included in an opera box.

Greetings,
On reissues, I find the "Karajan Gold" series to be inferior than the originals. However, the Schumann Symphonies in the DG "Symphonies Edition" are comparable to the initial release.
As for Die Frau Ohne Schatten, I recollect a caveat that it is a slightly abridged recording (like the Mozart Divertimento DVD), though I have not played the entire recording. Perhaps the performance itself was whole?

Hi tjh,
Welcome to the forum.
The recording of Die Frau ohne Schatten includes everything that Karajan conducted but Karajan chose to make several cuts and even changed the order of the second act, probably to reduce the number of scene changes.

I received the box from Amazon today.
I haven't had a chance to listen to any of it yet but the packaging is not ideal. If you already have Karajan 60, 70 or 80 you will know that the double CDs were in sleeves where it was difficult to remove the CDs without tearing the sleeve. All of the CDs in the opera box are in similar sleeves.
The 2008 EMI opera box had the texts and translations of the operas on a CD-ROM. This wasn't ideal but at least they were available if you needed them. The DGG box does not have any librettos at all.
Also, if you were expecting both the sets recorded by the Decca recording team with Leontyne Price, you will be disappointed. Tosca is included but Carmen isn't. At the time they were recorded, Decca released RCA recordings in the UK. As RCA and Decca separated a long time ago, Carmen is not included as it is an RCA recording.
