In April there is to be a film release entitled 'Karajan and his Festival' some information is available on www.karajanfilm.com or on the Karajan Facebook page. This dovetails with the 50th Anniversary of the first Salzburg Easter Festival where in April they are staging Die Walkure based on Karajan's original production. John

Hello Eidos,
Thank you for the information.
The DVD is available on Amazon's German website but not on the UK or US Amazon pages.
Does anyone know if the DVD has English subtitles?

Dear Charles, I think no english subtitles on dvd. My copy from Amazon.de will arrive in 6/7 days here in Milan. Maybe the only way at this moment for english is watching on Vimeo. You can rent or buy the movie vimeo.com/ondemand/karajanA friend who working in Sony Classical Italy says that this item on dvd will be for sale only in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Take care, Luca

I have now received the DVD. I think that all of the video clips from the 1967 Salzburg rehearsals were originally in the 1967 Die Walkure documentary. However there is a voiceover by Karajan (in English) at the start of the new DVD which I had not heard before. I assume that this was from the English language version of the 1967 documentary (the version of the 1967 documentary that I have seen is narrated in French).
On the 2017 DVD, there are subtitles for the interviews but unfortunately not for the rehearsal excerpts.
There is also an interesting recent interview with Götz Teutsch (a former cellist with the Berlin Philharmonic) and an excerpt from an archive interview with Irmgard Seefried.
Christian Thielemann is also interviewed and about half the film is about the 2017 revival of Die Walkure at this years Salzburg Easter Festival.
The DVD is PAL (not NTSC) and Region 2, so may not play outside Europe.
Let me know if you would like more information.

Thank you charles for your description. I will try to check it out. I am not familiar with the 1967 Walküre documentary you referred to though. What is the title of that and do you know if it's still available?
Thanks again.

The 1967 "Die Walkure" documentary was never officially released. Classical Video Rarities made it available in 2012 but unfortunately they are no longer trading.

Hi Charles, Lucca & TJH
I made a comment on the 1967 film 'The Making of an Opera' in my post in May following my vivit to the Salzburg Easter Festival, it is shown again below.
There was also a continuous showing on a wide screen TV of the original Video of Karajan’s film ‘The Making of an Opera’ Die Walkure made in 1967 alongside preparations and rehearsals for the original event. This appeared to be a full length version covering the whole opera, I have copy on DVD but this only really covers up to the end of the first act, the Museum video had extensive scenes of act 1 & 2 with Vickers & Janowitz plus the Ride of the Valkyries and the final Magic Fire Music. I understand that the rights to this film are owned by the French media company INA.
The Karajan Institute have since confirmed that the rights are owned by INA in France which is a shame as their version is much longer and better quality than the one I have.
Regards
John

Hi John,
The Classical Video Rarities DVD includes excerpts from all 3 Acts of Die Walkure. It lasts for 47 minutes and has narration in French. It looks like it was broadcast by the "MuzziK" TV channel as it has their logo in the top right corner of the picture.
John, as someone who was already following Karajan in 1967, do you remember if a version of the Die Walkure "Making of an Opera" film was broadcast in English on BBC2? I am still wondering where the Karajan voiceover in English at the beginning of the 2017 DVD comes from.
tjh, I have sent you a private message about the 1967 DVD that may be of interest to you.
