I always thought there were 2 HvK recordings of Mahler 9 - the original analogue one and the 1982 live digital one. I have the Gramophone Awards Collection edition of the live recording but have just noticed it is described as "AAD". I see there is a digital 1982 live performance in the Karajan Gold series - also Berlin 1982. The timings of these two live recordings see to be different, so I'm assuming they are in fact different live performances.
The Gramophone (analogue) one is described as being from the 1982 Berlin Festival. I'm not sure where the digital one was recorded.
I'd like to get the digital recording for its (presumably) better sound quality...but a bit worried these are actually the same. Can anyone elucidate?

There are indeed two performances of the Mahler 9 conducted by Karajan with the Berliners. Initially, a studio-based recording in 1981 was released on LP and cassette, which was then followed by the live performance from the Berlin Festival in 1982 (on the occasion of the Berlin PO's 100th Anniversary) which was released on CD only in 1983. This was at a time when most new releases were released on LP, cassette and CD. The 1982 performance is the most famous one, although both performances are very fine. In fact, I seem to remember that the studio recording won the Gramophone orchestral categorary the year it was released, a feat repeated by the live performance 2 years later, which also won the overall Recording of the Year. I hope this of some assistance. Best regards, Lee

Thanks, Lee. I think my Gramophone disc must be incorrectly labelled, because it says it is the 1982 live performance and the track times are very close to those on the Karajan Gold edition per the DG website - but it is labelled "ADD"!
It's all a bit confusing, but assuming I do have the later digital recording, I won't buy the Gold edition one as it is essentially the same... Might get the 1980 version as a comparison, though.

The 1982 IS the digital one. I like this particular performance. Compared to the studio recording, it's more raw.
There is a live Salzburg performance, also from 1982, which is even more intense, in my opinion.

There is another historical live choice - May 1st. I think this one is really incredible. In my opinion, it is the most impressive Mahler 9.
