The members of this forum have proven to be so knowledgeable that I'd like to pose a question, if I may, that's intrigued me for a long time, in the hopes that someone here might have an answer.
One of the many things that I've always enjoyed in the Telemondial films is their arresting opening sequence -- you know, the rotating globe that transitions into a cropped series of clips from the videos, with Karajan's conducting matched to dramatic background music, and the globe transforming into the "O" in TELEMONDIAL.
I can't even begin to express what a thrill it was for me to see and hear that logo sequence for the first time, when I purchased my first Sony laserdisc. For years, I'd wondered about the "soundtrack of a Telemondial video production" graphic on the backs of the Deutsche Grammophon CDs -- and here, finally, were the videos in question.
Watching that logo sequence definitely helps to generate anticipation before seeing one of the films, especially for the first time, and any time I screen one of the videos for friends, I always include the opening clip.
But I wonder if anyone knows the source of that music? Was it composed specifically for the films? I assume so. It's quite memorable. When I heard it for the first time, I thought it might be a fragment from one of the more modern works that Karajan had conducted, but which was unfamiliar to me. In fact, I even wondered if it might not have been composed by Karajan himself -- seeing that this was his legacy project. But I suppose that's unlikely.
So -- does anyone happen to know anything about that logo opening, and who might have written that 30-second music clip?
