Has anyone ordered anything from them? Here is their list of Karajan DVDs -- 15 titles in all: tinyurl.com/2vy3u8I bought their edition of the Osaka Pines of Rome concert before Sony released the officia DVD, and the quality was just terrible. It looked like it was from an old VHS recording. But I suppose the quality depends on their source material. They list two specific HvK documentaries, one simply called "Karajan Era documentary," and the other, the "Karajan Documentary," is apparently called "The Karajan Legend." Has anyone seen either of these films? They also have two Tokyo Beethoven concerts, and the Beethoven Violin Concert with Mutter and the European Youth Orchestra. If they took it straight from the laserdisc, the quality there should be reasonably good. Shipping seems to be excruciatingly slow...

A friend of mine ordered a few (non-Karajan) DVDs from Classical Video Rarities. One of the DVDs wasn't the item ordered, so my friend sent it back. Classical Video Rarities sent a replacement... again not the right one. My friend sent that back too. This time, no response at all.
Most of the items that my friend ordered turned out to be DVD-R transfers from off-television VHS tapes, generally reasonable in quality given the nature of the source material, though some had more background hiss and/or picture instability than you'd expect from such a source. One looked to me as though it had been pirated from the Hong Kong DVD release of the item in question.

Thank you for the comments about Classical Video Rarities. I've been waiting for my Karajan/Mutter/Youth Orchestra DVD-R for a long time, and it still hasn't arrived. It's nice that such a service exists, such most of these videos aren't otherwise available, but it's a pity that the sound/picture quality is so poor. darkehmen, you know this CD+DVD , Herbert von Karajan, "A Portrait", Studio Immortal? Oh, yes, that's the DVD release of the 1999 film Maestro, Maestro! You probably want the PAL version, which is still in print, and available from amazon.de: www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00007BHHC/It's a so-so film, with memories from a wide variety of Karajan's collaborators, including Mutter, Ozawa, Ludwig, Schneider-Siemssen, etc. The best parts of the film are the clips from various older Karajan documentaries, including the BBC film of the making of Die Walkuere, an electrifying segment of Karajan performing Till Eulenspiegel, rehearsing with the European Youth Orchestra, etc. Also fascinating is seeing Alexis Weissenberg (whom I consider Karajan's best piano soloist) defending Karajan's legacy from Elie Wiesel (who does, actually, acknowledge that Karajan was "a great conductor"). It's out of print in the U.S. on NTSC, but you can always find a re-seller willing to part with a used copy: www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00007BHHC/

I have both this DVD version (A Portrait) and the original Maestro! Maestro! on VHS from the KULTUR distributor. I wanted to get the DVD version as a replacement for my VHS copy, although found that this edition has nearly 30 minutes of material cut, and some of the scenes re-arranged in a different running order. All said and done, KULTUR's VHS version of Maestro! Maestro! is fuller and better - if you can scare up a copy online somewhere (as I was lucky enough to do) as I think this tape is fairly rare these days.

I wanted to get the DVD version as a replacement for my VHS copy, although found that this edition has nearly 30 minutes of material cut. Well, what do you know? It turns out that you're right. The DVD clocks in at 54 min, and the original on VHS is 84 min in length. Some of the cut footage isn't terribly missed -- and I have to say, I've never been overly fond of this film (gossipy, meandering, and unfocussed) -- but the good news is, there is a complete version available on DVD. It is, of course, a Japanese issue: tinyurl.com/yrlut3I own this DVD -- actually, an earlier DVD edition with a different cover design, but it appears to be the same release -- and can confirm the stated running time of 85 min. It's the whole thing. The bad news is, it isn't subtitled in English. Japanese subtitles can be engaged, but those aren't of much use. So if one really likes this film, and needs English subtitles, then yes, the Kultur VHS is the only way to see it. The above is the only complete DVD edition that I know of.

I decided to buy on Internet! I noticed that the two addresses Amazon: www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00007BHHC/www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00007BHHC/Offer different things. Amazon.de, I like a lot more because it has more choice of documentaries, books etc.. *************************************************************************** Please, tell me:" Are the purchases safe? If I want a new product, do I get a new product?" Thank you Rosy

Please, tell me:" Are the purchases safe? If I want a new product, do I get a new product?" Thank you Rosy Yes, Amazon is safe and the products purchased directly from them are brand new. Looking at the links you have given, with Amazon.com you are buying from sellers listed on their site rather than Amazon itself. In this case you will have to be careful that you are buying a new product rather than second-hand but it will be shown in the description. With Amazon.de you are purchasing direct from Amazon. The other advantage with German Amazon is that the shipping will be cheaper for you and, of course, you will be dealing in your own currency, the Euro. Personally, I have been buying on the Internet for years from all over the world using different suppliers and I have never had a bad experience. Amazon are very good (I use the British site, Amazon.co.uk) but actually I am just waiting delivery of the new Karajan /Lessing photograph book having purchased it through the German site. Best Wishes Linda

If your post is related to me, I've almost the videos by Classical Video Rarities, the problem is that there are no subtitles, that would be very useful when the language is German, and then as said in the posts above, the quality is bad, but for Karajan's admirers that videos are very important!I recommend them because there are many rehearsals! ********************** Rosy
