Yesterday I got the following two new DVDs released from Sony Music. *Beethoven Egmont, Fidelio, Leonore No 3 Overtures (1985) and Brahms Tragic Overture(1986) Release March 2008 Sony SIBC-60 *Beethoven Missa Solemnis (1985) Release March 2008 Sony SIBC-61 The following are links to the photos of their jackets: As far as I know, they SHOULD NOT be live recordings. However, there are a lot of audience and their shots in the movies. I wonder if they are kinds of "live and studio" mixed editions.

Thank you, mahalo. They had a planned release for 19th March and I pre-ordered a copy of the Beethoven and Brahms Overtures from CDJapan six weeks ago. It has not been despatched yet but as you have received your copy I expect it should be anytime soon

Magnificent!
But, help me : are the 2 DVDs the same package "Sony's 9-DVD set" ?
The photos are the same......... Darkehmen them reserved, but perhaps not yet arrived!
Since the 9DVDs interest me, I'd like to know whether these include the 2DVDs.

As far as I know, they SHOULD NOT be live recordings. However, there are a lot of audience and their shots in the movies. I wonder if they are kinds of "live and studio" mixed editions. Yes, I remember reading a general statement -- I think it was in Herbert von Karajan: An Autobiography -- that each of the Telemondial productions were filmed in conjunction with an actual performance of the given works, in order to have available the image of the complete orchestra. The fully "live" films (the various New Year's Concerts and All Soul's Day Concerts, etc.) all begin and end with long shots, but only a few of the "produced" films (I can't call them "studio" films, because they weren't actually made in a studio) ever Incorporated these long shots. The Mussorgsky film, for example, has the long shot at the beginning, but not the end, while the Debussy/Ravel film begins and ends with long shots. The new Beethoven/Brahms Overtures film is indeed interesting because it's the only one of the "produced" films which includes shots of the audience by itself, in between the pieces, as well as the long-shot opening and closing. Only in the choral "produced" films, such as the Brahms Requiem, and now, the Missa Solemnis, are the long shots also featured during the performance of the work, at certain key moments. The Missa Solemnis is distinctive in that it features more long shots than any other "produced" film -- including a powerful shot that one occasionally sees in the fully "live" films: the image of Karajan conducting, superimposed over the long shot of the whole orchestra. So yes, several Telemondial productions were amalgams of live and non-live film elements, although the soundtracks were all undoubtedly taken from the non-live performances. (By the way, both discs arrived here in Canada on Thursday, so I'm sure that everyone who pre-ordered theirs should be receiving them shortly.)

Darkehmen, Please, Herbert von Karajan: an Autobiography, it's a DVD? P.S.= Sony 9-DVDs set?No, that's the book by Franz Endler, Herbert von Karajan: An Autobiography. I believe you once mentioned that it has been translated as "Herbert von Karajan, La mia vita, a cura di Franz Endler" into Italian. I'm afraid that I didn't order the 9-DVD set, as it would have meant duplicating discs that I already owned.

Another query: Does the Japanese Missa solemnis DVD have any subtitles? And if so, in which language(s)?
It now looks very doubtful indeed whether these two discs will be released in the USA.
In both cases, Amazon USA has now deleted the information "Sign up to be notified when this item becomes available". Instead, they've replaced it with: "Currently unavailable. We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock."
Clearly, Amazon wouldn't have made any change unless they'd heard something from some official source. This seems to show that there are no longer any foreseeable plans for USA release.

Another query: Does the Japanese Missa solemnis DVD have any subtitles? And if so, in which language(s)? It does, but only in Japanese. Those can either be engaged or turned off. I've never actually watched a choral video with subtitles engaged. I know that the U.S./U.K. releases have English subtitles as options, but I've never turned them on. The Telemondial laserdiscs never had them, and I became used to watching these videos without subtitles. Rosy, the sound quality is, to my ears, excellent. It's at least as good as the comparable DG soundtrack releases. Some have said that the Sony DVDs are even better, sound-wise, and I wouldn't argue with that. The Missa Solemnis is also unique in that, because the choir area needed to be lit as well as the orchestra section of the Philharmonie, the lighting of the film in general is a step brighter than in any other Telemondial production. In every way, it's a singular video, and I have a hunch that it was deliberately left as the final Telemondial release because of its singularity. It makes an extraordinary impression.

Now my question is: the european dvd players can play these dvd's? Hello Guido Japanese DVDs will play on European players because Japan is Region 2 like in Europe. The USA is Region 1 and they will not play unless your player is multi-regional. I hope this is of some help Linda
